Matthias or Franziska, Sofia or Franceso, Ben or Emma. First names are given at birth. Once it has been registered the name remains with us for a lifetime. But what part does the name play in our lives? Does it shape us or do we fill it with meaning? How would it feel to be someone else and live with a different name? In his latest project, the Swiss Mats Staub, asks about names.
During the early part of the festival, Mats Staub invites artists, members of the festival team, festival-goers and locals in front of his camera in order to reveal what they would have been called if they had been of the opposite sex. He then will edit the footage gathered over the four days to create a video installation. The confluence of these many different faces who appear under their “other” name prompt a deep and emotional meditation on fundamental issues such as identity, destiny, family, community and the bonds that hold humanity together.
