Directed by Marco Martinelli, Aung San Suu Kyis  Life Under Arrest retraces through the voices of six children, starting at the end of the 1980s, the twenty years of house arrest of the leader of Burma’s National League for Democracy, the Nobel Peace Prize recipient of 1991 and, today, at the head of a free Burma, now known as the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. A work of art, visually original, the film has vast appeal. The story takes place in a storeroom for theatrical costumes: a child adventures through it and, from there, conducts us on a journey through an Orient rife with political upheavals but also lively music and striking colours. Along with an Aung San Suu Kyi powerfully interpreted by Ermanna Montanari, there are also clownish portrayals of Dictator-Generals, evil Nat-Spirits, journalists and U.N. diplomats, as well as comic rebels persecuted for their scathing satire against the regime.

Marco Martinelli, director and dramatist and Ermanna Montanari, actress, author and set-designer, founded Teatro delle Albe (1983) – in dialogue with the international scene and a centre for production – sharing the responsibilities of artistic direction. The texts of Martinelli (Ubu Prize, Hystrio Prize, Golden Laurel) have been published and performed in Italy, France (the Face to Face and Fabulamundi projects), Belgium, Germany, Romania, Slovakia, Chile, Brazil and the United States (focus Italian Playwrights Project). His work Se Faire Lieu was published by Edizioni Alternatives Théâtrales. Brèche dans le Théâtre en 101 Mouvements, with a preface by Marco Consolini-Université by the Sorbonne Nouvelle, and, by Editoria&Spettacolo, Marco Martinelli: Un Drammaturgo Corsaro by Maria Dolores Pesce. Montanari (Ubu Prize, Duse Prize, Golden Laurel, Associazione Nazionale Critici di Teatro Prize) carried out the artistic direction of the International Festival of Santarcangelo in 2011. Titivillus published the biography of Laura Mariani Ermanna Montanari, Fare-Disfare-Rifare nel Teatro delle Albe (Italian/English) and Quodlibet published the volume curated by Enrico Pitozzi Acusma, Figura e Voce nel Teatro Sonoro di Ermanna Montanari (Italian/English).
