IN SHORT ⟶ Fotoromanza is an innovative workshop led by Giorgina Pi since October 2023, engaging over 40 women spanning various generations. It represents a magical, revolutionary and joyful opportunity to narrate personal stories through collaborative reinvention.
Fotoromanza is a free workshop tailored for women over 65, overseen by director Giorgina Pi and Bluemotion, and hosted at Angelo Mai since October 2023. The project aims to craft a “photo comic” of each participant’s life—a tangible ricreation of the self, including photographs, timelines, real and fictional characters. Each woman is invited to revisit cherished experiences and fulfil unrealised dreams, rediscovering lost moments.
The community of Fotoromanza will open its headquarters to Short Theatre, sharing the space where a few parts of the in-progress archive can be seen, the participants can be met and fragments collected collectively during the workshop can be observed while the photo stories get completed.
The youngest woman is 65 years old, while the eldest is 88. They come from diverse backgrounds and have unique life stories: it’s a group of female feminist directors, photographers, playwrights, organisers, and actresses that collaborate on their own iconographical and literary archive.
Fotoromanza serves as a kaleidoscope to foster creativity and a shared “cure” for loneliness. It draws inspiration from the poetic path of philosopher Maria Zambrano’s writings and the work of Greek poet Niki Rebecca Papagheorghiou. It is an adventure through reality and desires, writing, and images, offering a chance to reinvent one’s life story in old age and transform it into a personal masterpiece.
Bluemotion is a collective born in Rome within the artistic and political experience of Angelo Mai, an independent space dedicated to arts. Performers, directors, musicians and visual artists join forces to share their fascinations, their attention on the present time and on art for the sake of creation. Bluemotion works are the result of the sharing of its members’ different perspectives. The artists participating in Bluemotion are also activists for human rights and show business workers’ rights. Among other things, Bluemotion worked to promote in Italy the work of British playwright Caryl Churchill and the poetic writing of Kae Tempest.
