After the workshop at La Pelanda (12:00–5:00 pm), Short Theatre 2024 – in collaboration with If Body, the public program curated by LOCALES – invites the audience to meet and dialogue with artist Noor Abed and curator Lara Khaldi, creators of School of Intrusions (SOI).
School of Intrusions (SOI) is a pedagogical platform founded in Ramallah in 2019 that aims to develop collaborative spaces of temporary and situated learning, taking cues from anti-colonial practices, experience-based pedagogical methodologies and collective approaches to space and resources.
The talk will be an opportunity to explore the co-training methodologies based on the experience of the School of Intrusions, together with the dynamics generated by the knowledge of places and the processes resulting from the observation of alternative economies integrated in everyday life. A conversation to discover the urgencies and research that guide and shape the project, including the experiences that emerged during the workshop held at the beginning of the day.
Noor Abed (Palestine, 1988) works at the intersection of performance and film. Her works create situations where social possibilities are both rehearsed and performed. Abed attended the Whitney Independent Study Program in Νew York (2015-16), and the Home Workspace Program (HWP) at Ashkal Alwan, Beirut 2016-17. In 2020, she co-founded the School of Intrusions with Lara Khaldi, an independent educational collective in Ramallah, Palestine. Abed was an assistant curator for documenta 15, Kassel (2021-22). She is currently an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam (2022-24) and was recently awarded the Han Nefkens Foundation/Fundació Antoni Tàpies Video Art Production Grant (2022).
Lara Khaldi (Palestine, 1982) is an independent curator and critic from Jerusalem, Palestine, living temporarily in Amsterdam. She was part of the curatorial team of documenta 15. Until recently she was the head of the Media Studies Programme at Alquds Bard College, Jerusalem and a tutor in the Disarming Design MA program, at Sandberg Institute, 2020-2022. In January 2023, Khaldi was appointed Director of de Appel in Amsterdam. LOCALES is a curatorial platform that aims to inspire a reflection on the public sphere through artistic practices. Through a series of site-specific programs involving commissions of new artworks, explorations of public spaces, educational activities, and performances, LOCALES addresses the complexity of contemporary urgencies starting from the political and social history of symbolic places in the city and their local communities. The current LOCALES team consists of Sara Alberani, Marta Federici, Chiara Siravo (Curators), Chiara Pagano (Curator of Narratives), Giulia Caruso (Project manager), Alice Albanese Ginammi (intern).
