IN SHORT ⟶ In the solo a capella, a single voice resounds with a multitude of other voices. Rwandan singer, author, and choreographer Dorothée Munyaneza whispers fairy tales that bring memories to the surface, revealing their collective and transformative driving force.
Interested in exploring the scars of history, Dorothée Munyaneza tackles the Rwandan genocide, gender violence and racial inequality in her work. In the solo a cappella, she merges a repertoire of Rwandan songs with others sung in various languages, giving a voice-body to what we are usually not permitted to know. Within the performative agon of sound, the threshold of audible/inaudible and speakable/unspeakable reveals the viscosity of something that manifests in its sudden and unrestrained flow. Yet, some voices become lost in time, space and sorrow.
Dorothée Munyaneza composes – with strength and delicacy – an assemblage that interweaves absence with present, past and future, in a performance with no frills. Her body turns into an archive of sounds evoking memories in interconnected stories.
Dorothée Munyaneza will hold a workshop within the RECIPROCITY section entitled Reflecting the Times.
Dorothée Munyaneza is a multidisciplinary artist; she uses music, songs, text and movement to explore the concept of breakage as a dynamic force. Munyaneza draws inspiration from true stories and gathers the body, memory and time to create a space for resonance. Born in Rwanda, in 1994 she moved to England with her family; she studied at the Jonas Foundation in London, then she graduated in Music and Sociology in Canterbury and eventually moved to France. She has worked with François Verret, Radouan Mriziga, Alain Mahé, Jean-François Pauvros, Robyn Orlin, Ko Murobushi, Nan Goldin, Stéphanie Coudert, Rachid Ouramdane, Maud Le Pladec, Alain Buffard, Maya Mihindou and Ben LaMar Gay. In 2013 she founded the group Kadidi in Marseille. She translated in French Hopelessly Devoted by Kae Tempest that she has been invited to stage at the Bouffes du Nord in Paris next November. She is currently an associated artist at the Théâtre National de Chaillot, la Maison de la Danse and Lyons’ Dance Biennale and a resident artist at Fondation Camargo.
