François Chaignaud

Думи мої | Dumy Moyi

French choreographer, performer and historian François Chaignaud presents Думи мої| Dumy Moyi at Short Theatre 2021. It is a multilingual recital fuelled by Ukrainian, Filipino and Sephardi melodies that incorporate the bewitching rhythms of theyyam dances that are particular to North Malabar, India. Wearing monumental costumes, the dancers are transformed into divinities capable of summoning a community to listen. In WEGIL’s Sala Rossa Chaignaud, wearing a garment of sculptural proportions, inaugurates a ceremony of the body intended as an antidote to the rituals of Western theatre: this character shakes the space, conferring movement via vibration.

I imagine this multilingual recital created inside a Romain Brau sculpture-costume, as a sinuous mix of dance, song and liquor. All are on the same level, no tiered seating, no fourth wall. We will take advantage of this intimacy to enjoy wide ranging delicacies as well as outrageous acts.

By stirring up this intersection between acoustic research, the study of ancient rituals and contemporary dance, by using the evocative power of the voice to increase the permeability between realms of imagination and via the sensual rigour of movement that converges with heterogeneous historical references, Chaignaud‘s works criss-cross the confluences between erotic dance and operetta, hooping, drag and cabaret shows, as well as the 20th century avant-garde choreographic modernism, with influences ranging from François Malkovsky to Isadora Duncan.

*It should be noted that in a part of the performance there will be a small snake that will be held by the performer.
