Valentina Magaletti & Nídia

Sound is vibration, an expressive matter that acts in resonance, in pulsation, connecting bodies and environments in mutual reverberation. The power that rhythm has to give substance to the invisible emerges powerfully in the encounter between two musicians, whose artistic practice is rooted in experimentation and the desire to reshape reality with sound: Nídia and Valentina Magaletti.

An Afro-Portuguese producer and DJ, Nídia is part of the record label and art collective Príncipe Discos, one of the most influential figures – as an artist and as an individual member of the community – in spreading a transformative aesthetic and ethos of kuduro culture in the clubbing and electronic music scene. With a keen compositional instinct trained in the underground scene of Lisbon’s bairros, Nídia interlocks sounds, swarming rhythmic fantasies, percussive elements, fluid melodies and hypnotic brass samples that leave the listener unable to stay still.

Valentina Magaletti is an Italian drummer, multi-instrumentalist and composer based in London. Her versatile technique can go as far as incorporating anything from simple vibrations to marimba, from contact microphones to found objects, in an ever-changing acoustic narrative. As comfortable performing behind a delicate ceramic drum kit as she is in hammering out motorised rhythms, her creative approach to percussion has resulted in a varied discography and numerous exciting collaborations, which see her move between the seemingly disparate worlds of independent and mainstream music.

About to be released with the Parisian label Latency, the new album by Valentina Magaletti & Nídia follows in the footsteps of Moritz von Oswald, Laurel Halo, Duval Timothy and more. Short Theatre 2024 hosts a music performance in which their respective techniques merge to create a wild and enthralling musical dialogue incorporating object vibrations, sounds, and rhythms.

Valentina Magaletti is an Italian drummer, composer and percussionist. Her musical goal stems from the need to enrich a folk and eclectic palette through continuous listening and experimentation with new materials and sounds. She has played and composed with many artists including Nicolas Jaar, Jandek, Helm, Raime, Malcom Catto, Charles Hayward and many others. In her current project, Vanishing Twin (Fire Records), she has a more conventional jazz approach in which, with the other trio members Cathy Lucas and Zongamin, she explores spaces poised between jazz and psychedelia.

Nídia is an electronic producer and Afro-Portuguese DJ from Vale da Amoreira, her debut album Danger (2015) was immediately appreciated, allowing her to quickly establish herself in the artistic scene. In 2017 she won a Grammy for the production of Fever Ray’s Plunge and gained success for remixes of Yaeji, Kelela and Lafawndah. She collaborated on The Honey Colony show at London’s Southbank Centre and performed at major festivals such as Barcelona’s Sónar and São Paulo’s Red Bull Music Festival. Her third album, 95 MINDJERES (2023), pays tribute to the women who fought for their freedom in the battle for independence in Guinea-Bissau.
