La gioiosa permeabilità

deep listening workshop

The workshop is free and open to everyone without previous experience in the field.

Pauline Oliveros was an American queer composer, improviser and performer; in her book Deep Listening, a composer’s sound practice she explored the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the voluntary, selective nature of listening. For her, deep listening is “learning to expand the perception of sounds to include the whole space/time continuum of sound—encountering the vastness and complexities as much as possible”. Sound artist Diana Lola Posani applies this method to her performative research about the voice and, through musical scores and improvisations, pursues a deeper awareness of both external and internal soundscape therefore stimulating experimentation, improvisation and cooperation. In the workshop La Gioiosa Permeabilità (Joyful Permeability) she explores our ability to listen as a poetical tool to expand the limits of the real: what is the difference between a sound we remember, dream of and have listened to? This collective action has the aim of deconstructing and removing these perceptive differences.
Starting from Deep Listening by Pauline Oliveros, the participants will be guided through the rediscovery of the imaginative potential of listening, while accepting the risk of internal sounds revealing new uncharted territories.
