WEGIL hosts CRATERE, space for cohabitation that manifests itself as a daily flow of poetic words, performances, short lectures, which follow one another at the times indicated day by day. The ticket for CRATERE is daily and grants access to all the performances of the same day that take place one after the other in the scheduled timeframe.
Giovanna Zapperi is a writer, essayist and Professor of Contemporary Art History at the University of Geneva with numerous publications on art and feminism to her name.
In the CRATER/WEGIL space at Short Theatre 2021, she will hold ‘The Instruments of Autonomy’, a lecture that investigates documentary and experimental cinema made by female Italian artists of the 1960s and 70s, a cinema that spoke out against minoritizing dynamics. In a context in which cinema was based on the male control of technology as well as the appropriation of women’s energies and their imaginations, expressed as such by Dacia Maraini in 1978, now authors and directors have overturned these mechanisms, claiming technology for themselves.
Starting from the intermixing of self-representation, subjectivity and film production, Zapperi draws us a map of interconnected issues, such as the emergence of women as political subjects in post-war Italy, the relationships between cinema and self-awareness, and the importance (including the politics) of friendships, alliances and intimacy between women.
